SNCO Wives Club
Camp Lejeune SNCO Wives Club Thrift Shop
On August 23, 1960, the Thrift Shop was officially opened for business. The purpose of the Thrift Shop was to give anyone interested an opportunity to purchase high value goods at low cost. The profits from the Thrift Shop were to be utilized to bolster the funds for the scholarship awards, the clubs work at the U.S Naval Hospital, and its donations to local charities and similar projects.
The measurements of the room in which they operated from were about 20 feet wide, 40 feet long. It was located in building 1403.
A Balance of $315.00 remained in the account of the defense Opportunity Shop and these funds were made available to the Thrift Shop for initial capitalization. In addition to the funds, they were offered clothing racks and left over articles. The Thrift Shop was to be administered by the SNCO Wives' Club in all matters of operation, including the maintenance and auditing of its financial records.
On August 19, 1960, the Thrift Shop was opened in order to take donations and consignments. Besides the usual household, clothing, hardware, baby and personal items for sale, they had the exchange of military uniforms. The Thrift Shop received 20% of all items sold.
The Thrift Shop has grown in size and business over the years. As a result, scholarships are being given to students at Camp Lejeune High School as well as all high schools located on Onslow County.
The Thrift Shop always needs volunteers to help in its operations. Anyone can volunteer regardless of rank or military affiliation. If you are interested in volunteering, please stop by the Thrift Shop and talk to either a crew leader or the Thrift Shop Chairperson.
